FREE AT LAST: Southern Davao is Panabo’s first drug-cleared barangay

By Sigfred Navasquez – CIO Panabo

Like all things dubious and menacing, drugs lurk in the dark corners of the night, waiting to ruin the lives of unsuspecting people with the promise of fleeting bliss as bait, but as its pleasurable effects wear off comes addiction and the tendency to become violent.
The administration of Mayor James Gamao in Panabo works to clear all these dark corners and regain the light that guides those who have fallen under the spell of dangerous drugs in gaining their lives back. Waging war against drugs is the government’s move to eradicate the plague caused by these harmful substances.
As the national government’s arm in the local setup, LGU Panabo has strengthened this campaign through Barangay Drug-Clearing Operations.
In pursuant to the Executive Order No. 15 series of 2017of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, which is the policy of the State that pursues the creation of an Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD) and Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force to suppress the drug problem in the country. The LGU Panabo, through the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), collaborates with relevant agencies such as the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Philippine National Police, Dangerous Drugs Board, and the Department of Interior and Local Government to address this prevailing problem.
The signing of the Declaration of Southern Davao as the first Drug-Free Barangay in Panabo last June 29 is this effort’s best output yet. This is a living proof that a barangay can be free from drugs through strong collaborative effort.
Barangay Captain Hon. Jose Resurrecion said that the tedious work of making Southern Davao drug-free is nothing compared to the challenge that the barangay has yet to face in order to maintain this status. But fronted with this daring task, he said that with the help of his constituents, nothing is unattainable.
Panabo is now one step closer towards becoming a city free from the stifling grasp of drugs.
